Local volunteer to chair festival that will celebrate all things fried
ATHENS, Ala. – Christy Hubbard has volunteered at fundraisers that incorporate golf, chili cook-offs, Easter egg hunts and selling apples.
She’s tackling a new endeavor, serving as festival chair of the inaugural Athens Grease Festival. The festival, sponsored by the Spirit of Athens, aims to celebrate the Greek origin of the city’s name and feature fried foods that Southerners have enjoyed at their mother and grandmother’s tables.
“I thought that the Grease Festival sounded like such a fun and exciting event,” Hubbard said. “I was honored to be asked to be a part its inaugural year.”
The festival is set for Saturday, Sept. 29 in downtown Athens. Proceeds raised will benefit downtown restoration and renovation projects. A committee is in the process of planning vendors and events for the day, including a fun run, bicycle ride, music, Greek style games, Southern crafts and a children’s area. Attendees are encouraged to wear togas.
The committee helping Hubbard includes many local business and civic leaders. These leaders believe in eating healthy but also believe in holding on to our traditional Southern recipes and having a day to splurge as long as we eat responsibly the other 364 days of the year.
“It’s a fun way to feature our culinary culture and showcase our beautiful and historic downtown,” Hubbard said.
Hubbard has lived in Athens for the majority of her life and graduated from Athens High School and the University of North Alabama, where she received a degree in marketing. She is involved with Athena League, where she organized the Apple Annie Charity Golf Tournament. She also has volunteered with the Athens-Limestone Public Library Story Book Ball, Spirit of Athens Easter Egg Hunt and Hospice Chili Challenge. She works for the Athens City School System.
